Consultative Selling vs. The Challenger Method

In a past interview, Sarah Bordson, VP of Strategic Growth at Adage Technologies, explained that sales professionals need to incorporate a consultative approach in their service to build long-lasting relationships. Her company is an ecommerce web design and development firm. They introduced the Consultative Selling method in 2001, and not only did they blow their customers’ minds, but this approach blew the caps off a few commission pays if you catch our drift.

Keep in mind that not all sales jobs require getting to know customers this way, so the degree to which you employ this method may vary. Bottom line? This Method is ideal for sellers who thrive with recurring sales. Check out Bordson’s experience with the Consultative Selling approach here.

Okay, that’s great. But where’s the data?

  • Leadsquared describes Consultative Selling as the number #1 strategy in sales.

    • According to Leadsquared, more than 89% of buyers describe the salespeople they ultimately do business with as “trusted advisors”. This means this approach is widely popular with prospects/clients and is worth looking into if you’re not already using it.

    • Adage Technologies has been using this method for 20+ years and to date is reeling in a revenue of $19M+ per year.

    • This 2019 Forbes article shares that 70% of business buyers look for a trusted advisor that adds value to their business (but sellers are often sabotaged by their own leadership that see customers as nothing more than numbers).

The Challenger Sale Method: for real or fugazi?

In the past, we’ve highlighted sales leader Brent Adamson, co-author of The Challenger Sales Method. As the name suggests, this approach is all about challenging a customer’s way of thinking and by doing so, bringing new insights into the fold. But what proof do we have that this thing actually works?

Actual data from Adamson’s research

  • 40% of all high performers (across all industries) apply The Challenger Sale Method

  • High-performing sales reps are twice as likely to use this method

  • 50% of “all-star performers” fit the Challenger Sale profile
